Captain America is an American fictional character, a superhero who appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941) from Marvel Comics' 1940s predecessor, Timely Comics.

As an American soldier in World War II he was given a serum that transformed him into a physically perfect human. He wears a patriotic costume, wields an indestructible circular shield, and fights for American ideals of liberty and justice.

In 1940, writer Joe Simon conceived the idea for Captain America and made a sketch of the character in costume. Simon recalls: "I wrote the name 'Super American' at the bottom of the page, but then realized it didn't work as there were too many 'Supers' around, 'Captain America' had a good ring to it, and there weren't a lot of captains in comics so It was as easy as that".
